What does Signal actually check?
All 61 weighted checks the scanner runs, category by category — and why each one matters to your visibility on Google and in AI search. Higher-weight checks move your score more.
Technical Health
The plumbing every crawler tests before it reads a word of your content. A failure here can make everything else irrelevant.
HTTPS enforced
Weight 5Browsers flag non-secure sites and Google ranks them lower. Visitors who see a security warning leave before they ever read your offer.
Homepage loads cleanly
Weight 5If your homepage returns an error code, search engines and AI crawlers drop it from their results entirely.
Canonical URL declared
Weight 3Without a canonical tag, the same page can be indexed under several addresses, splitting your ranking strength between them.
Page is indexable
Weight 5A noindex tag tells Google to remove the page from search. On a homepage it makes the business effectively invisible.
robots.txt present
Weight 3robots.txt is the first file every crawler reads. A missing or broken one leaves crawler behaviour to chance.
XML sitemap live
Weight 3A sitemap is the menu you hand to Google. Without it, new and deep pages can take weeks longer to be discovered.
Short redirect chain
Weight 2Every redirect hop adds delay and leaks ranking signal. Chains of 2+ hops slow both people and crawlers down.
HTML5 doctype
Weight 1Without a modern doctype browsers fall back to quirks mode, which breaks layout and parsing in subtle ways.
Character encoding declared
Weight 1A missing charset can garble special characters and forces the browser to guess the encoding.
AI Search Visibility
Whether the crawlers behind ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and the rest are allowed in — and whether your facts are stated in a format machines trust.
GPTBot allowed
Weight 4GPTBot feeds ChatGPT training and browsing. If it is blocked, your business cannot appear when customers ask that assistant for recommendations.
OAI-SearchBot allowed
Weight 3OAI-SearchBot feeds ChatGPT search results. If it is blocked, your business cannot appear when customers ask that assistant for recommendations.
PerplexityBot allowed
Weight 4PerplexityBot feeds Perplexity answers. If it is blocked, your business cannot appear when customers ask that assistant for recommendations.
ClaudeBot allowed
Weight 4ClaudeBot feeds Claude by Anthropic. If it is blocked, your business cannot appear when customers ask that assistant for recommendations.
Google-Extended allowed
Weight 3Google-Extended feeds Gemini and Google AI features. If it is blocked, your business cannot appear when customers ask that assistant for recommendations.
Applebot-Extended allowed
Weight 2Applebot-Extended feeds Apple Intelligence and Siri. If it is blocked, your business cannot appear when customers ask that assistant for recommendations.
Bingbot allowed
Weight 3Bingbot feeds Bing search and Microsoft Copilot. If it is blocked, your business cannot appear when customers ask that assistant for recommendations.
CCBot allowed
Weight 2CCBot feeds Common Crawl, used by many AI models. If it is blocked, your business cannot appear when customers ask that assistant for recommendations.
llms.txt published
Weight 2llms.txt is an emerging standard that hands AI assistants a curated summary of your site — an easy head start over competitors who lack one.
Structured data (JSON-LD) present
Weight 4Structured data is how you state facts about your business in a format machines trust. Google rich results and AI answers both draw on it.
Structured data parses cleanly
Weight 3Broken JSON-LD is worse than none: crawlers silently discard it, and you lose the rich results you thought you had.
AI Answer-Readiness
AI assistants build answers from content that is structured like answers. These checks measure how quotable your pages are.
FAQ / HowTo / Article schema
Weight 3Question-and-answer schema is the raw material AI answer engines quote. Sites with it get lifted into answers; sites without it get summarized vaguely.
Question-style headings
Weight 3AI engines match user questions to headings. Pages whose headings mirror real questions get cited; label-style headings get skipped.
Clear opening statement
Weight 3The first substantial paragraph is what AI assistants read to work out what you do. A vague opener produces a vague AI description of your business.
Chunk-friendly paragraphs
Weight 2AI systems ingest pages in chunks. Wall-of-text paragraphs over ~90 words often get split mid-thought and lose their meaning.
Descriptive link text
Weight 2"Click here" tells Google and AI nothing about the destination. Descriptive links pass meaning — and ranking signal — to your key pages.
E-E-A-T & Freshness
Experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust: the identity signals Google’s quality systems and AI engines use to decide whether you are a real, current business.
Organization / LocalBusiness schema
Weight 4This schema is your machine-readable business card: name, logo, contacts. Without it, Google and AI systems piece your identity together from fragments.
Linked official profiles (sameAs)
Weight 3sameAs links connect your site to your LinkedIn, socials and directories, proving to machines that all those profiles are one real business.
Content freshness signal
Weight 3Both Google and AI engines prefer content they can date. An undated site reads as potentially abandoned.
Author / people identity
Weight 2Google’s quality guidelines reward content with identifiable humans behind it. Anonymous sites are easier to discount.
Name, address, phone on page
Weight 3Local rankings and AI recommendations lean on consistent business name, address, and phone. If they are not on your site, nothing else can corroborate them.
On-Page SEO
The classic fundamentals — titles, descriptions, headings and social cards — measured on your homepage and up to five inner pages.
Title tags (30-65 chars)
Weight 5The title tag is the headline of your Google listing. Missing or truncated titles cost clicks even when you do rank.
Meta descriptions (70-165 chars)
Weight 4The meta description is your ad copy in search results. Without one, Google improvises — usually badly.
Exactly one H1 per page
Weight 4The H1 tells crawlers what a page is about. Zero H1s leaves them guessing; several H1s blur the topic.
Logical heading hierarchy
Weight 2Headings are the outline machines read first. Skipped levels (H1 straight to H4) scramble that outline.
Open Graph tags
Weight 3Open Graph controls how your link looks when shared on WhatsApp, LinkedIn and Facebook. Without it, shares show a bare grey link nobody taps.
Twitter / X card
Weight 2The card tag upgrades your links on X from plain text to a large image preview.
Content Depth
Whether there is enough substance for search engines to rank and for AI engines to summarize you accurately.
Substantial page content
Weight 4Pages under ~500 words rarely rank for anything competitive, and give AI engines too little to summarize you accurately.
Internal linking (10+)
Weight 3Internal links are how crawlers find your deeper pages and how ranking strength flows through your site.
Blog / insights section
Weight 3A blog is the machinery that earns rankings for the questions customers actually type. Sites without one compete on the homepage alone.
No near-empty pages
Weight 3Near-empty pages drag down how ranking systems judge the whole site.
Performance
Real mobile Core Web Vitals from Google, plus the weight and blocking resources that determine them. Speed is a ranking factor and a conversion factor.
Largest Contentful Paint (mobile)
Weight 5LCP is how long the main content takes to appear on a phone. Google uses it in ranking, and every extra second loses visitors.
Interaction to Next Paint (mobile)
Weight 4INP measures how quickly the page reacts when someone taps. Laggy response reads as "broken" to users.
Cumulative Layout Shift (mobile)
Weight 4CLS measures content jumping around while loading — the effect that makes people tap the wrong button and leave.
HTML document weight
Weight 2The HTML document is the first byte of everything. A bloated document delays every other resource behind it.
Image lazy-loading
Weight 2Below-the-fold images loaded eagerly compete with the content people actually see first.
Modern image formats (WebP/AVIF)
Weight 2WebP/AVIF images are 25-50% smaller than JPEG/PNG at the same quality — free speed.
Render-blocking resources
Weight 3Every blocking stylesheet or script in the head delays the moment anything appears on screen.
Mobile & UX
Most visits are mobile. These checks measure whether phones get a first-class version of your site.
Mobile viewport meta
Weight 5Without a viewport tag, phones render the desktop layout shrunk to unreadable size. Google flags the page as not mobile-friendly.
Responsive images (srcset)
Weight 2srcset lets phones download phone-sized images instead of desktop ones — often the single biggest mobile data saving.
Image alt text (80%+)
Weight 3Alt text is how search engines, AI systems and screen readers see your images. Missing alt text is invisible inventory.
Pinch-zoom not disabled
Weight 2Disabling zoom traps users who need larger text and is penalized in accessibility audits.
Semantic nav & footer landmarks
Weight 2Semantic landmarks (<nav>, <footer>, <main>) tell machines which part of the page is content versus chrome — cleaner extraction for search and AI.
Security
The response headers that keep the padlock intact and your visitors safe — and that mark a professionally run site.
HSTS header
Weight 3HSTS makes browsers refuse ever to load your site insecurely — closing a classic interception hole on public Wi-Fi.
Content Security Policy
Weight 3A CSP limits what scripts can run on your pages — the main defence against injected malicious code.
X-Content-Type-Options
Weight 2This one-line header stops browsers from "sniffing" files into executable types — a cheap, standard hardening step.
Clickjacking protection
Weight 2Without frame protection, your site can be invisibly embedded in a hostile page and your visitors tricked into clicking things.
No mixed content
Weight 4Loading any http:// resource on an https:// page breaks the padlock and gets scripts blocked outright by modern browsers.
Trust Signals
The human signals: can a visitor call you, find you, and believe you are real? Machines read the same cues.
Visible contact details
Weight 3A business customers cannot phone or email is a business they do not trust — and ranking systems read the same signal.
Social profile links
Weight 2Links to active social profiles corroborate that the business is real and current.
Favicon
Weight 2The favicon shows next to your name in search results and browser tabs. A missing one reads as unfinished.
Privacy policy link
Weight 2A privacy policy is both a legal requirement in most markets and a quality signal ranking systems check for.
